INVESTMENT CRITERIA

Good Reason Houston is committed to working with a diverse set of organizations to solve complex problems. We make investment decisions based on the following:

Strategic Alignment: Our vision is that every child, in every neighborhood, excels in a world-class public school and thrives in the Houston of tomorrow. To achieve our vision, we focus on investments that:

  • Increase the number of students learning in high-quality schools
  • Engage families and the community to amplify their influence in district-level decision-making
  • Expand the pipeline of game-changing educators

Commitment to Core Beliefs: Our core beliefs govern our decisions and actions. We strive to understand how these beliefs can translate into action through our partnerships.

  • Driving toward equitable outcomes is our North Star.
  • Diversity is our region’s superpower.
  • Houston families deserve compassionate honesty.
  • There is more than one way to solve complex, persistent problems.
  • Houston is powerful, yet unfinished.
  • Courageous optimism fuels progress.

Team and Model Effectiveness: Critical to an organization’s success is the team’s commitment to and experience in improving and sustaining school quality as well as advancing equitable student outcomes.  In addition, organizations should have the desire and willingness to adapt approaches and/or models to local contexts and changing environments as necessary.

Financial Sustainability: Our investments should have a long-term impact. This means that we want to know that an organization has additional stable sources of funding and can demonstrate strong financial solvency.

    INVESTMENT GEOGRAPHY

Good Reason Houston prioritizes investments in nine ISDs, and the charter networks / schools and community organizations that operate with their boundaries. These ISDs were prioritized based on two factors:

    • Operate within the Houston region (at least one campus within Houston city limits) AND
    • Have at least 50% of their campuses serving a student population with 70%+ of students identified as economically disadvantaged
