A Field Trip to Explore Inspiring Public Schools in Houston.

How might we design schools that recognize, and grow, the brilliance in every child?

Houston is home to extraordinary educators who are proving that it is possible to create schools where every student, regardless of background, language, or test scores, feels seen, supported, and set up to thrive. As our city grows, so does the urgency for inclusive, high-quality schools that reflect the full potential of our students.

What if we could learn from what’s already working, and imagine what’s possible when every child is given the opportunity to succeed?

Over the past year, Good Reason Houston has been exploring campuses where all students as a whole and each and every student population individually (SpEd, Black, Latino, Eco Dis, Emergent Bilingual, etc.) are achieving above both the state and local averages and spotlighting the brightest examples through their Schools That Inspire distinction. This September, we’ll be taking a handful of Houston leaders to see one of these schools in action.

On September 15th in partnership with the Inspiration Project, Good Reason Houston will be convening a small group of district and school leaders to explore how we can expand quality instruction for all students across our city.

During this experience, we will get a chance to visit and learn from a few of these campuses.. We’ll learn from their leaders, families, and community members and walk away with insights that can strengthen the systems that shape student success citywide.

This September, We'll Visit:

At Harmony School of Fine Arts & Technology, students embark on a journey where creativity and academic excellence converge. In a vibrant environment that celebrates diversity and inclusion, every child is empowered to explore their unique potential. Through a commitment to high expectations and a collaborative community, Harmony fosters a space where learning is not only meaningful but also inspiring.

Nitsch Elementary — Greater Acres Homes: At Nitsch, strong systems and structures help educators use data to drive instruction and ensure every student stays on track to succeed.
Laurenzo Early Childhood Center — Greater East End: Students use oral language and project-based learning to express ideas, tell stories, and acquire vast amounts of knowledge.
Melillo Middle School — Pasadena: Melillo focuses on strong instructional leadership and inclusive culture to support middle schoolers as curious, capable learners.
Farias Early Childhood Center — Near Northside: At Farias, play-based learning meets high expectations, showing what is possible when creativity and academic readiness are both prioritized from day one.

The Experience

This is a focused, one-day field experience designed for deep learning and connection.

You’ll:

  • Tour Harmony and observe students and educators in action
  • Hear directly from Harmony families, leaders, and community members
  • Gather with other Houston Schools That Inspire principals from across the city to learn what’s driving student success on their campuses
  • Collectively reflect on what’s working and explore how these insights can shape our own efforts to serve all students well.

We’ll close the day with happy hour for informal connection and continued conversation.

To get the most out of the experience, we ask all participants to be fully present throughout the day.

Ahead of the day, you’ll receive a detailed logistics memo with info on where to meet, what to bring, and the day’s schedule. When you register, you’ll be able to share your dietary preferences and any accessibility needs we can support.
