Good Reason Houston Announces Legislative Priorities for the 89th Texas Legislative Session

Education nonprofit advocates for policies that strengthen schools, support teachers, and prepare students for success.

As the 89th Texas Legislative Session approaches, Good Reason Houston has announced its 89th Legislative Session Priorities , emphasizing academic accountability, early education, teacher support, and postsecondary readiness. These initiatives reflect the organization’s mission to ensure every child in Houston has access to a high-quality education.

“Advocating for policies that put students first is critical to creating positive, systemic change in Houston’s public schools,”

Good Reason Houston’s Legislative Priorities:

  • Fair, Transparent, and Rigorous Accountability: Ensure students, families, and communities have access to a robust and transparent academic accountability system – one that measures student academic success, public school quality, and illuminates where to target needed resources.

  • High-Quality Early Learning: Increase resources for high-quality early education programs and incentivize the use of research-backed classroom tools designed to promote effective, engaging interactions and environments foundational to early learning.

  • Strategic Investment in Public Education Funding: Ensure public school systems have the financial resources they need to meet student learning needs and drive post-secondary success, including strategic investments in data-backed, student-focused reforms originally introduced by HB 3 (86R) that are designed to improve student outcomes.

  • Strengthening Effective Teacher Pipeline: Cultivate and retain a workforce of education professionals by incentivizing rigorous preparation pathways, recognizing and investing in highly effective educators, and supporting ongoing professional development.

  • Driving Postsecondary Readiness: Set graduates up for postsecondary success by incentivizing robust college, career, and military readiness pathways in K-12 programming that align with postsecondary opportunities in high-wage, high-demand industries.

To provide further insights into these priorities and their potential impact on public education, Good Reason Houston hosted a live webinar (link) in which Director of Government Relations, Trista Bishop-Watt, previewed key education policies expected to shape the 89th Texas Legislative Session. Attendees gained valuable context on education policy, explored Houston-specific challenges and priorities, and learned about actionable solutions with statewide implications.

Good Reason Houston is committed to advancing these priorities to close achievement gaps and build a stronger future for Houston’s students.
