Houston ISD approves new teacher evaluation system that will include measures on student growth, rigorous evaluator certification process
HOUSTON – March 20, 2025 – Houston ISD school board trustees unanimously approved the new teacher evaluation system during Thursday’s meeting. The system includes measures focused on student growth and a rigorous evaluator certification process to ensure consistency and fairness.
“Strong schools start with strong teachers,” Good Reason Houston CEO Cary Wright said. “An effective teacher evaluation system isn’t just about measuring performance — it’s about helping educators grow, ensuring they have the support and feedback they need to succeed. That’s why Good Reason Houston applauds the Houston ISD Board for adopting the new Teacher Excellence System. This system is rooted in research, aligns with state requirements for the Teacher Incentive Allotment, and—most importantly—recognizes the hard work of effective educators.”
Wright emphasized the importance of proper implementation.
“For this system to succeed, it must be rolled out in the right way,” Wright said. “That means being thoughtful, being clear, and making sure our educators understand not just the process, but the expectations and the support that’s available to them. Because when we do that—when we build understanding, when we build trust—that’s when we see real impact.”
A successful rollout also requires ongoing collaboration and input from those who know our schools best—our educators and community members.
“We want to thank Houston ISD for bringing educators and community voices to the table, making sure this system reflects the needs and insights of those it will impact most. As this system rolls out, we encourage ongoing dialogue and collaboration. Let’s keep listening, keep improving, and keep supporting the teachers who make a difference for our kids every day.”
