Houston’s leading civic organizations urge Houston ISD Board of Managers to place school bond on November ballot

Good Reason Houston, BakerRipley, Greater Houston Partnership, Houstonians for Great Public Schools, Houston Region Business Coalition among organizations to sign letter supporting much needed infusion of funding to Houston’s schools

HOUSTON – August 8, 2024 – Several of Houston’s leading civic organizations issued a letter Thursday to the Houston ISD Board of Managers, encouraging the Board to place a school bond on the ballot for the Nov. 5 election. The Board is expected to decide if the bond will go to voters during Thursday’s regularly scheduled School Board meeting.

“Good Reason Houston is inspired to be among many of Houston’s leading civic organizations coming together to express how vital it is to the future of Houston that the HISD School Board provide voters the opportunity to vote for a measure that invests much needed funding in the health, safety, and preparation of our region’s children,” Good Reason Houston CEO Cary Wright said.

Greater Houston Partnership, BakerRipley, Houstonians for Great Public Schools, Houston Region Business Coalition, Collaborative for Children, Ed Trust, Emerge, and ProUnitas also signed the letter of support.

In the letter, the organizations emphasized that large, urban districts in Texas typically ask voters for bond approval every five years. However, HISD has not asked voters to approve a school bond since 2012 (to support high schools). The last time there was bond approval for elementary and middle schools was in 2007, nearly 20 years ago.

“Houston ISD is long overdue for a significant investment in its students through investment in its school infrastructure.  We urge the Houston ISD School Board to vote yes to placing a bond on this November’s ballot.  Houston ISD’s students can’t wait any longer,” the letter states.
