Understanding how districts spend dollars tells us a lot about their priorities and the ways by which they’re making student-centered decisions. This series aims to demystify school finance and budgeting by sharing more on how districts are funded, how they typically allocate resources, and, in the case of our region’s largest district, Houston ISD, what the proposed budget for the 2024-25 school year means for students.
Each year, Good Reason Houston will provide a data-driven snapshot of student outcomes in the Houston Area, as well as for Houston ISD, the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area, and Harris County. These snapshots show how our region is doing at preparing students along their education pathway, through five key indicators (from pre-K enrollment through postsecondary completion).
In this inaugural report, we outline how Houston is poised now more than ever to ensure that students receive the knowledge and skills necessary for the future. To get there, we must step into this moment – this moment of high accountability standards, rigorous expectations for the content schools put in front of students, and a research-based approach to teaching.
