Good Reason Houston Hosts Inaugural “Be the Reason” Fundraiser

Over 600 Houstonians gathered at POST Houston on Thursday, September 29, for Good Reason Houston’s inaugural “Be the Reason” event. Good Reason Houston, which supports public school districts and charter networks throughout the city to improve their campuses and increase the number of Houston kids learning in great public schools, challenged the community to be the reason for optimism, change, and progress in our public school systems.

Educators, elected officials, leaders and community members from across the city gathered to take a stand for Houston’s public school students. Good Reason Houston’s founding CEO, Alex Elizondo, led the event by sharing an update on public school quality in Houston – read more here. “The urgency to improve public education for every child in our city was high in 2018 when this effort commenced. It is even higher now as our school systems are recovering from the effects of the pandemic, school closures, and transitions in and out of virtual teaching and learning.”

To recognize the commitment and leadership to ensure the success of students, Dr. LaTonya Goffney, Superintendent of Schools for Aldine ISD, received the “Leadership is Optimism” award, for her courageous leadership in setting high expectations to make sure students in Aldine succeed.

Good Reason Houston Board Chair Scott McClelland announced the next phase for Good Reason Houston at the event. “Building on this foundation, Good Reason Houston is prepared to scale the depth and breadth of its work in our community,” Scott said. “Driving this work forward will require significant funding and I am proud to share that Good Reason Houston is publicly launching our new campaign to raise and invest $45M in the transformation and creation of more great public schools in every neighborhood in Houston by 2026 because we don’t have time to wait.”

The event was sponsored by Academy Sports + Outdoors, H-E-B, Susan Sarofim, and Bristow Group. Pictures from the event will be posted on our Facebook page.
